Interview Preparation

The key to a successful interview is preparation, it is essential to do your homework beforehand so that you perform to the best of your ability. Competition in the current job market has never been tougher therefore it's more important than ever to know how to 'sell yourself' to gain that edge over your competition

An interview is your opportunity to sell your skills and experience and to make yourself the candidate of choice, here are some tips to help you prepare

  • Confirm the date/time and location for your interview, if possible do a dry run to the venue and time how long the journey takes
  • Make sure you know who your meeting and their job title. Get a contact number in case you need to telephone on the day (for example if you're running late)
  • Have the job specification in advance of interview, make sure you know it inside out and have comparisons ready with your own skills and experience
  • Know your CV - be able to talk fluidly through the content, know your dates and be able to talk in detail about the duties of each role
  • Research the company - Visit the company website but don't stop there, find out about their background, when they were established etc. Research the industry, find out what products and services the company offers and who their main competitors are. Have a look for any recent developments or news articles featuring the organisation

During the Interview

Below are some simple tips to remember for performing well at interview

  • Dress professionally - first impressions are vital so always wear a suit and keep any jewellery to a minimum.
  • Body language - Employers will notice how you handle yourself, sit upright and alert, maintain eye contact, give a firm handshake and remember to smile!
  • Be confident - speak clearly and use a firm voice to exude energy and enthusiasm
  • Answer questions clearly and concisely, listen to the question and make sure you understand before you respond. Yes/No answers are not sufficient, give descriptive answers that go into detail
  • Ask questions - Have some questions ready to ask the interviewer, If you have any queries about the role or company this is your opportunity to find out, this will help you make an informed decision about the job.
  • Don't lie - if you don't know the answer to a question then don't be afraid to admit this as you will be caught out
  • If your interested in the position make sure and tell them at the end of interview, this is also a good time to ask what the next stage in the process will be and also when you could expect to hear from them

An Interview is your opportunity to shine and to convince an employer that you're the right person for the job. Remember to prepare well and show your enthusiasm, If you want the job you have to show it!
