Common Interview Mistakes
Once called for interview it's important that you match up to employers' expectations, make sure and avoid these common interview mistakes and land that job!
- Lack of courtesy - If your running late phone and let them know, remember to thank the interviewer for taking time to meet with you (you'd be surprised how many candidates forget this part!)
- Unable to provide satisfactory reasons for moving job (employers are reluctant to hire candidates who have moved around a lot)
- Being negative about previous work places - no matter how much you didn't like your job or your boss, prospective employers don't want to hear this
- Avoid questions about salary and package, hours of work and holidays (unless asked).At an early stage you want to focus on the company and the role. You will be better placed to ask these things once the employer has shown an interest in your application.
- Over confidence - confidence is a good thing but there's a fine line between being confident and cocky
- Going out the night before - Following on from not preparing for an interview is the belief that it's ok to go out socialising the night before an interview. The idea that if your home at a reasonable time you'll be fine in the morning is not worth losing a great job over!
- Not showing enthusiasm -You've got the interview because on paper you can do the job, you have the skills and experience but If you don't make it perfectly clear to an interviewer that you want the job then you probably won't get it!
Remember, there is a huge amount of competition around for vacancies so you have to stand out from the crowd. If you get called for interview then it's well worth investing a little time and effort for what could be your future career!
