Gaining work experience
In order to become a fully qualified member of Accounting Technicians Ireland (and use the initials MIATI after your name) you are required to have gained two years relevant accounts experience. For many students or affiliate members who do not work in the accountancy field or are looking for their first accounts role it can be difficult and frustrating trying to gain some relevant experience
In the current job market competition for trainee roles is very high so it is important to cast a wide net when searching for work. By making use of all job avenues open to you, you can greatly increase the likelihood of finding a job or work placement. Below is some advice on where to start in your job search.
Prepare CV and Cover Letter
- Firstly you need to prepare a professional CV and cover letter, the CV should be clear and concise and no more than two pages in length and remember include your Accounting Technician Exam results
- The cover letter should clearly explain your reasons and motivation for seeking a job in accounts- be open and honest about this (You are pursuing the qualification and are required to fulfil the work experience element) You can also include how you've always enjoyed working with figures, you might be looking for a career change and accounts is something you would love to pursue. You should also highlight your other skills and attributes and why these would be an asset to the company.
Sending your CV
- Traditional avenues of recruitment such as responding to job advertisements and using recruitment agencies are still very relevant but don't stop there, remember a company doesn't need to be advertising for you to send them your CV.
- Research accountancy practices and businesses in your local area and send them your CV and cover letter (start in the golden pages or search online) Today many trainee jobs aren't advertised and with large numbers of companies now using recruitment databases by sending your CV at least an employer has your details on file and can contact you.
- JobBridge have launched a new Internship scheme which provides the opportunity to gain valuable experience in a working environment. This could be a great chance for you to gain some relevant accounts experience. If this internship programme sounds like something you would be interested in then contact your local FAS centre
Following up
- When sending speculative applications it is imperative you follow up with a phone call or at least an email. With so many candidates available you can't sit back and wait for employers to contact you.
- By speaking to an employer they're much more likely to remember you and keep you in mind for any future vacancies.
- If speaking with an employer be prepared to 'sell yourself' this is an excellent opportunity to stand out from the crowd.
Cast a 'wide net'
- Make use of all your contacts, speak to friends, family, colleagues, class mates and let them know you're looking for some accounts related work.
- If you know someone who runs their own business volunteer to help them with their accounts (preparing Tax returns or preparing invoices etc)
- Ask your current employer about working in the accounts department (perhaps one afternoon per week) If your organisation has an external accountant then ask them about possible work placements.
- Use social networking sites such as Facebook or Linkedin to increase your profile.
- Use all relevant media sources - newspapers, industry publications, recruitment websites, professional bodies, education providers and company websites.
Attend Industry events and sign up for any accountancy newsletters seeking out any opportunities that may arise.
Academic Achievement
- Finally, in the current climate employers place great significance on candidate's exam results. Therefore it is important you concentrate on your studies and try to achieve the best results possible.
- With increased competition you need to prove to an employer you have an aptitude for the subject and really understand the theory. A strong academic record will enhance your application and help you achieve your goal of securing that first accounts job.
